compLexity SC2 @ IPL5 Preview

by Alex “Yuenanimous” Yue

Tomorrow marks the start of the IGN Pro League’s third LAN event, IPL 5. With players flying in from all around the globe to take a shot at the $100,000 prize pool, you can be sure that compLexity will be there in full force. Being one of the last major tournaments of 2012, compLexity SC2 is determined to make IPL 5 a tournament to remember.

Today TriMaster, Heart, GanZi, Sasquatch, and Goswser will be flying out to The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and resting up before the event. Tomorrow they will be taking on the best StarCraft II players around. To get ready for kick off tomorrow, here’s a preview of what compLexity is bringing to IPL 5.

Kim “GanZi” Dong Ju

When GanZi isn’t entertaining fans with his incredible dance moves he’s hard at work developing and refining his play. Since his memorable performance at the Lone Star Clash 2, GanZi has been living at the compLexity Gamma Gamers House with his teammates, preparing for IPL 5. Over the course of this year, GanZi has managed to place in the top 10 at several of his previous events, but the first place prize has consistently eluded him. This may be his chance to take the gold.

Joshua “TriMaster” Niven

Ever the underdog but never completely counted out, TriMaster is a player who has made quite a name for himself by upsetting the best of players. Earlier this year he was able to take out MarineKingPrime at the MLG Summer Championship, a feat that pretty much everyone thought was impossible. Tomorrow, TriMaster will look to put up another upset as he takes on his former teammate NaNiwa, widely considered to be one of the best Protoss players around. For those who know TriMaster and know how much work he has been putting into the game, we fully expect him to make a major splash at IPL 5.

Michael “Goswser” Dobler

The first player from the compLexity Academy to get promoted to coL.SC2, Goswser is another player known for his upsets. Originally making a name for himself at MLG Orlando 2011 by taking out the GSL champion Polt, Goswser is ready to be in the limelight again. He’s been working hard at the Gamma Gamers House, refining his play to get ready for IPL 5. Unfortunately Goswser is matched up against his teammate GanZi in the first round. It’s always difficult have a teamkill in a tournament, but it’s inevitable. The only comforting thought about this match is that the spectators will be in for quite the treat. Expect to see some crazy mindgames as both players try to psych each other out with fake builds and elaborate cheeses. This will be a match you don’t want to miss.

Gage “Sasquatch” DuBose

Another player who started out on the compLexity Academy, Sasquatch is a stellar Zerg who seemed to come out of nowhere. Sasquatch’s first major appearance was in the MLG Spring Championships and WCS US Nationals, where he took out several well known players, such as Machine, YaTa, and HayprO. Sasquatch’s real breakout performance, however, was at the 2012 MLG Summer Championship. There he went on to earn the second-highest foreigner placement and the MLG Breakout Player award. This weekend Sasquatch is looking to make an even bigger name for himself as he’ll be taking on GSL champion Seed in the first round.

Kim “Heart” Min Hyuk

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying that Heart will do anything to win. First breaking into the scene with a notably “cheesy” style, Heart was taking out amazing players with elaborate all-ins. Since then, Heart has switched up his style showing very strong macro games in both the GSL and tournaments around the globe. Because of this new change in play style Heart is an even more ruthless player, able to take wins through cheeses or long games. He’s now more unpredictable, something that’s sure to make his opponents sweat.
