Weekend Update: March 25th-27th

by Alex “Yeunanimous” Yue

Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another edition of the Weekend Update. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all major games in the StarCraft II scene from over the weekend. If you missed these games when they were happening live and are planning to watch the VODs, you may wait to skip this article. Now that you’ve been warned against spoilers, lets get into the action.

The V

This past Friday marked tenth edition of The V and saw compLexity’s own CrunCher continue his winning streak for the fourth week in a row. CrunCher can now add Evil Geniuses’ StrifeCro to the list of players he’s put the crunch on. Winning in a 4-0 blowout, CrunCher dominated thanks to some excellent Force Field placement, insane micro and well thought out strategies. In game three CrunCher even manged to bring out a Mothership… and use it effectively! Best of luck to coL.CunCher as he looks to continue his streak for the fifth week in a row next Friday.

FXOpen Invitation #2

The next major tournament that happened this weekend was the FXOpen Invitational Series #2. CompLexity was proud to send both coL.CunCher and coL.stalife into the fray. Unfortunately stalife fell in the round of 32 to FXOSheth, but after taking out ESCGoOdy. CunCher on the other hand managed to fight his way to the round of 8, sniping some huge names including: oGsInCa and FXOMOonan. CrunCher finally fell to dignitas.SeleCT, who in turn got knocked out by oGsSuperNoVa; the player who ended up winning the entire tournament.

TSL3 RO32 Days 3 & 4

Lastly, this weekend also saw two days of the TSL3, which were full of some of the most epic upsets to be seen in SC2 yet. On day three of the round of 32, French player Adelscott managed to take out “the Game Genie Terran,” former GSL champion IMMvp, widely considered to be the best Terran in the GSL despite his Code A status, with a score of 2-0. Match two saw FXOqxc triumph over MVPGenius, Blizzcon Champion and GSL Code S player. Match three saw ESCGoOdy take out former GSL champion IMNesTea, widely considered to be one of the best Zerg players on the planet, with a score of 2-1. The last game of day three saw Dignitas.NaNiwa take out Team Liquid’s Ret with a score of 2-1. Obviously, most players expected these well established Korean players like MVP and NesTea to dominate the TSL3. Could these results be a sign of what’s to come in eSports?

Day four of the TSL3 continued the tradition of upsets. The first match was between coL.CunCher and EGIdrA. Despite calling CunCher a “walk over,” IdrA lost the match 2-1. In fact, CrunCher started a new meme in the SC2 community by simply saying “🙂” once game three was in the bag. Match two saw Empire.Kas take on TLAF-Liquid`HayprO. In a back-and-forth series, Kas manged to take the win with a final score of 2-1. Match three saw MYM.Mondragon versus ZeeRaX. Displaying a new style of roaches, roaches, and more roaches, MonDragon bweat ZeeRaX 2-0. The last match for day four saw the Brood War legend oGsNaDa going head to head with TLAF-Liquid`TLO. Despite TLO’s best efforts, NaDa reigned supreme with a final score of 2-1.

Well that’s it for this edition of the Weekend Update. As always, leave a comment below mentioning any tournaments that you know of and are occurring over the next weekend. This way we can do our best to tune in and include it in the next edition of the Weekend Update.
