coL.HS @ European Championship

June 11th, 2016

by Sören ‘Fantasy’ Vendsahm

It is European Championship season! While the group stage in France for the soccer competition just began, the Hearthstone Spring European Championships are down to the Top 8 over in California. Among those eight elite cardslingers are two compLexity pros that have their eyes on the prize – the ticket to BlizzCon.

First it will be Shaman king Mateusz “Loyan” Roszkowski taking on British youngster GeorgeC in the first round of the Single Elimination tournament. In a fierce Best-of-Seven competition Loyan will have to prove that the lineup he picked stands above the one of his competitor. Staying true to himself, the popular streamer obviously put his faith in Thrall with a Midrange variation of Shaman. The same Midrange vibe is coming from his Hunter deck as well, while the other three deck choices of the Polish player are more true to European Championship traditions in bringing control decks. N’Zoth Paladin and N’Zoth Warrior, as well as the always popular RenoLock is the compilation of decks Loyan is pinning his hopes on for the competition.

One lucky break was already caught by the compLexity squad, as they were seeded on opposite sides of the bracket – so the dream of the coL Grand Finals to determine the European Championship is still alive!

For that Simon “Crane” Raunholst has to win a rematch with Russian player Iner first. The two met already in the EU prelims a few weeks ago, when a spot at the European Championships was on the line. Back then Crane managed to win the game by shutting out the Zoo Warlock of Iner.

A lot of talk was around Crane and his deck choices already, as GosuGamers pointed out all the tech choices the Danish player is going to try out this tournament. From standard deviations of the normal decks in Crazed Alchemist and the return of double Doomguard in Zoo all the way to AoE options like Lightning Storm in Aggro Shaman and Dreadscale in Midrange Hunter. Also this tournament will mark the return of Patron Warrior for Crane, a deck he had dismissed for the EU Prelims. With the recent meta changes it might be the return of Patron dominance brought by one of the Patron kings of the scene. Next to Hunter, Warlock, Shaman and Warrior, Crane once more puts his faith in Freeze Mage to get the job done – a deck with which he had massive success recently.

The stage is set for a stacked tournament as some of the biggest stars are set to collide for the EU title. Last years EU Champion and DreamHack Bucharest 2014 Champion ThijsNL is in the mix, as well as ESL Katowice 2016 Champion AKAWonder. Rounding out the tournament are up-and-comers like Italian player Turma and German player Casie, making this one of the most competitive EU Championships to date.

The action will be brought to you by another member of the compLexity Gaming family, as birthday boy Simon “Sottle” Welch is in studios and will commentate the tournament once more with Frodan, Azumo, Brian Kibler and Frank Lepore. Tune in to twitch.tv/playhearthstone to follow the tournament, as coL.Hearthstone is looking for a big weekend in California!

Anaheim, California

June 9th, 2016

Today, compLexity takes to the skies in force as we head to Anaheim, California for MLG Anaheim 2016 for Call of Duty! Not only will #coLofDuty be competing in the event, but several compLexity managers and staff will be on hand running a compLexity booth! The compLexity booth will feature giveaways, play with the pro events, autograph sessions and demonstrations by Dr. Caitlin McGee!

Dr. Caitlin McGee

Dr. McGee will be performing demonstrations at the booth to teach players and attendees a series of stretches they can do to help prevent and alleviate wrist, back, and neck strain while gaming for long periods of time. She will also be handing out pamphlets containing a series of at-home guides for attendees.

Dr. McGee got her start in physical therapy for eSports after noticing the prevalence of carpal tunnel and other wrist injuries among PC gamers. Since then, she has expanded into the console gaming scene and frequently travels to Super Smash Bros. competitions to provide consultations and treatment to players on-site.

superjj crowned XFINITY Invitational Champion

June 6th, 2016

by Sören ‘Fantasy’ Vendsahm

The success continues for compLexity’s Hearthstone squad. While two other members, Crane and Loyan, embark on a journey to California later this week to compete for the European Spring Championships and a coveted ticket to BlizzCon, their teammate Jan “superjj” Janßen added yet another title to his already impressive resume.

After his breakout performance a few months ago at SeatStory Cup 4, where he showcased his adaptability to new cards and circumstances with his Reno Freeze Mage, the German player has been on a consistent roll. Deep runs in big tournaments like DreamHack Austin, Insomnia 56 and 57, as well as solid placements in tournaments like the Cursed Trial event, Pax East Major, and representing Europe abroad against China, have cemented superjj’s name amongst the greatest of Hearthstone.

This weekend he added another accolade to his growing credentials by defeating the absolute elite to claim the XFINITY Invitational Season 2 Championship. The event was set up in two brackets to promote the Warcraft movie hitting theaters, as European players played in the Horde bracket, while the North American cardslingers filled the role of Alliance. JJ emerged as the leader of the Horde with closely contested and tight wins over ThijsNL, his practice partner StanCifka, and Na’Vi player XiXo. All those matches ended 3-2 in favor of superjj, making the hearts of his fans race with every draw and move. Against Thijs and XiXo he faced elimination matches early, being down 0-2 and 1-2 respectively. In the end he fought through and found the clutch victories he needed, making it out of the EU bracket to face the North American Champion of the Alliance.

It was the young superstar of Team Archon, the NA Winter Champion Amnesiac, who defeated just moments before DreamHack Austin Champion Chakki, for the right to fight superjj . Sadly for the youngster, the draws and matchups were not on his side, and superjj decisively swept the Alliance Champion off the board. Amnesiac’s Control Warrior couldn’t get anything going as RenoLock, Leeroy and Conceal, and Doomhammer went to work on Grommash. Fittingly, it all ended with superjj and the Shaman hero Thrall delivering the final blow to Amnesiac’s hopes with his trusted Doomhammer, the same character and weapon of the promoted movie showing on silver screens around the globe.

Besides JJ putting another title under his belt and winning $6,000 USD, he is also reclaiming the #1 spot in the world according to GosuGamers ranking system. During the time of DreamHack Austin, JJ was briefly at the #1 position already. Now with DreamHack Summer on the horizon, the confident German is looking to solidify himself as the most consistent player in the entire scene.

compLexity secures P-1 Athletic Visa for Rory “dephh” Jackson

June 6th, 2016

Today, we are happy to announce that we have secured yet another P-1 Visa, this time for Rory “dephh” Jackson. Rory joins a small group of Counter-Strike players to have ever received a P-1 Athletic Visa.

We are proud that once again our players have been recognized for the passion and dedication they have shown over the years. compLexity became the first organization to secure a work visa for Marcus “zet” Sundström in Counter-Strike nearly 10 years ago, and we are honored to be continuing the tradition of excellence in pro gaming.

“I’m super excited to announce Rory “dephh” Jackson has a work visa that will allow him to remain in the United States and practice with the team,” said Matt Dickens, Coach of compLexity Counter-Strike. “We have been working on this for some time now and it is a great relief to know Rory will get to continue chasing his dream of playing professional Counter-Strike on TV.”

Rory “dephh” Jackson had this to say:

“I’d like to thank the hard work and dedication from my family at compLexity for aiding me with the acquisition of my P-1 Athletic Visa. Without their support I wouldn’t be able to travel the world and attend events for a game I love to play. I’m proud to be a part of a team that show so much dedication to their players and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Thank you for your continued support!

compLexity Welcomes Asmodai to Stream Team

June 1st, 2016

Hearthstone and streaming go together like peanut butter and jelly. The card game of Blizzard was an instant success on Twitch with both entertainment for the casual fans and the ones looking to go above and beyond in the realm of competition. compLexity Gaming has always been about both parts with one of the best competitive rosters throughout the games tenure, but never losing sight of the “entertainment” aspect with members like Noxious and Ryzen. We have always valued both and today we are proud to announce the arrival of the full-package – Christoffer “Asmodai” Stub.

Almost every fan of Hearthstone has heard of the Norwegian streamer Asmodai, as he is a long-time member of the community and a long-time streamer on Twitch. From the beginning he didn’t always value the tryhard grind to the top, but rather the entertainment value and interaction with his viewers. What he still gets is the top legend placements though, creating one of the greater stream synergies in Hearthstone. Creative and entertaining decks, an interactive host, methods of communication beyond just Twitch chat – obviously referring to the Snapchat action – Asmodai has developed a fanbase and a product that everyone should envy.

Now he has decided to join up with compLexity Gaming to take it to the next level and grow his stream even further. The cap-wearing Norwegian will sport the swooshes from now on, joining our Stream team.

“I’ve decided to join compLexity Gaming after being teamless for almost a month now.”, Asmodai said about this new opportunity. “It’s a team which has a lot of players that I respect and is a team I think I can grow with and get the tools and support to achieve my goals.”

Sören Vendsahm, Manager of coL.HS had this to say:

“I am very happy to see Asmo on compLexity Gaming. I’ve been a long-time viewer of his and always enjoyed his general attitude towards the game, bad beats, the community. I don’t think there is anyone out there with a better positive vibe when it comes to streaming. Incredibly happy to have him on board.”

Asmodai will not be in the Hearthstone competitive team though, as he is focusing all his energy on growing his stream and putting on a good show day-in and day-out. Taking a break from streaming for tournaments is currently not on his mind – don’t worry Asmodai fans!

To welcome our newest addition make sure to follow Asmodai on Twitter at coL_Asmodai and Twitch at twitch.tv/asmodaitv to catch the first glimpse of him in compLexity Gaming.

compLexity secures P-1 Athletic Visa for Jevon “Goonjar” Gooljar-Lim

May 24th, 2016

Today, we are happy to announce that we have secured a P-1 professional athlete visa for Jevon “Goonjar” Gooljar-Lim. Jevon is one of the first Call of Duty players in the world to receive a P-1 Visa, reserved for internationally-recognized athletes.

With eSports visas garnering so much attention in recent weeks, we are thrilled that another compLexity gamer has been acknowledged at such an official level. We are also confident that Jevon’s visa is a large step in the right direction for legitimizing competitive gaming; the government issues a maximum of 25,000 P visas annually, making the application and screening process very selective.

“When signing Jevon we knew it was very important to ensure his ability to participate in US LAN events,” said Kyle Bautista, General Manager of compLexity. “We made it a top priority to work with Activision/Blizzard, ESL, and the legal team at McCown & Evans to secure a P-1A visa. With his approval for a P-1A, Goonjar should have no problems entering the country for future events under the compLexity banner. We hope that our efforts will help to pave the way for more Call of Duty players to gain P-1A status and reduce the barrier of international competition.”

Jevon “Goonjar” Gooljar-Lim had this to say:

“I’m thankful to compLexity for helping me become one of the first professional Call of Duty players to be approved for a US P-1A athletic visa. This is something that I could not have achieved without their help and I look forward to being with them for the future.”

Thank you for your continued support!
